Ces soulèvements étaient inspirés des événements de mai 1968, qui avaient vu des milliers de manifestants, majoritairement des étudiants, défiler dans les rues de Mexico. Les manifestations de 1968 avaient connu, à la veille des jeux olympiques d’été de Mexico, une fin sanglante, puisque l’armée avait tiré sur les manifestants, faisant un grand nombre de victimes. Mais, si les jeux olympiques avaient ainsi pu se dérouler dans le « calme », les idées révolutionnaires n’en étaient pas mortes pour autant.
Aujourd’hui les Zapatistes entendent bien défendre leurs causes. L’une d’entre elles est la reconnaissance du peuple indigène dans la société mexicaine, trop souvent délaissé par l’opinion publique et les programmes électoraux de la majorité. Ils réclament notamment l’autonomie des 10% de mexicains d’origine indigène, vivants souvent en autocratie grâce à des exploitations de type agricole et des objets artisanaux qu’ils vendent dans tout le pays."
